Tuesday, 13 May 2025: The Asian Surf Cooperative (ASC) is excited to introduce our newest initiative, the Asian ProAm Surf Series (APSS), a progressive competition initiative designed to support and elevate surfing development by bridging the gap between grassroots level events and global platforms.
This structured Asia-wide platform will help talented surfers develop into professional athletes, enabling them to represent their countries on prestigious international stages such as the ISA, WSL, and the Olympics, but also offer traveling and adventure surfers an opportunity to surf new places, meet new people, and join in fun events that are officially sanctioned by the longest running surfing organization in Asia, the Asian Surf Cooperative.
Together with Tipi Jabrik’s Grom Patrol program, the APSS establishes a progressive competition structure that starts with a quality junior experience at a local level before advancing to national and regional competitions. With at least one event per participating country annually, surfers will be able to hone their skills at home before competing against top athletes from across Asia in other APSS events, fostering a strong pipeline of talent and marking their position in the Asian Rankings.
Key Features of the APSS:
• Structured Pathway: Surfers progress from local competitions to the APSS regional tour, earning ranking points toward an Asian Regional Championship.
• Incentivized Travel: Top-ranked surfers will compete in APSS events across Asia, encouraging international representation.
• Tour Schedule: The inaugural APSS tour plans to feature 5-7 stops, with participants expected from 8-10 countries, and eventually expanding to more stops and 15+ countries.
• Cost-Effective Development: Unlike costly international events, APSS offers an affordable yet high-quality competition option, leveraging ASC’s 20 years of experience to ensure world class technical and media support at each event.
• Inclusive Competition Format: A non-elimination Round 1 format ensures all competitors get at least two heats, maximizing development opportunities and experience.
• Longboard and Shortboard: Men’s and Women’s Divisions
• Local and Regional Impact: APSS events create tourism, media exposure, and community engagement, fostering sustainable growth in each host country.
As with all Asian Surf Co sanctioned competitions, APSS events will follow recognized industry guidelines for infrastructure, technical rules and regulations and media output, ensuring that the competitors all benefit from the highest standard of quality in all areas for their optimum development experience. The APSS is above all about effectively growing the sport of surfing in Asia.
The inaugural 2025-26 APSS season will start off in North Nias with the Afulu Pro, which will take place from 1-3 July, just after the WSL Nias Pro QS6000 and Pro Junior, making it easy for participants to join the event. Stay tuned for more on the Afulu Pro, including a Travel and Event Guide.
Other APSS events that are scheduled for 2025 are in Covelong, India in July, the Dongsha Open of Surfing in China in October, followed by the Pingtung Jialeshuie Surf Festival in Taiwan, and working towards additional events in Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand for in 2026. The APSS season starts in July of 2025, and ends in June of 2026.
